We’ve already investigated Exhaust Gas Recirculation systems and an EGR Solution but what about the DPF or Diesel Particulate Filter system?

Firstly, we must point out the physical removal of a DPF from a UK road vehicle is illegal and will fail an MOT test. There are of course other situations where DPF Solutions are required, such as Motorsport or specialist projects and TayTec Tuning can assist. In the meantime, let’s look at the system and how it interacts with your vehicle.

DPF – Diesel Particulate Filter

A DPF is an emissions control device which does exactly what it says on the tin; it’s role is to filter particulates (seen as sooty deposits) from the exhaust gas of your diesel vehicle. It does this by forcing exhaust gasses to flow through a honeycomb style filter assembly which traps and stores the particles.

DPF - Diesel Particulate Filter

Regeneration

You may well have heard the term “DPF Regeneration” mentioned, this just describes the method the system uses to purge itself by burning off what it has trapped, and it achieves this with the use of heat, either ordinarily through day to day driving when the exhaust heats up sufficiently to self-regulate the contents, or as a command sent from the ECU when it detects the contents of the DPF have risen to around half full.

Sounds good right?

Well yes, absolutely, when working as designed, modern DPFs do their job very efficiently and it’s seldom you see plumes of smoke emanating from the back of a diesel vehicle these days. But like any system, they can be prone to issues when not maintained or not working optimally.

Soot will burn off at around 300˚C , so providing the vehicle gets plenty of longer drives at reasonable engine speeds, it’s unlikely any issue should occur. This isn’t the reality of many journeys though, especially commercial vehicles which do a lot of regular stops. The engine barely reaches sufficient temperature or should a regeneration be in progress and a stop is needed, the process is interrupted.

What are the symptoms of a blocked DPF?

If your DPF is blocked, you can expect some of the following signs and symptoms:

  • Reduced engine power

  • Increased fuel consumption

  • Smoke from the exhaust

  • Engine warning lights

  • ECU fault codes

  • Limp mode

What are the risks of driving with a blocked DPF?

Continued operation with a blocked DPF can result in engine or component damage. You can also be liable to prosecution due to excessive exhaust smoke.

How can I get my DPF fixed?

There are several ways a blocked DPF can be rectified. The type of rectification depends on the severity of the blockage.

DPF cleaning: This is a common way to restore a blocked DPF. The DPF is cleaned using a custom air fed chemical foam and sprayed directly into the filter housing. Not to be confused with the far less effective aerosol sprays deployed into the air intake, this technique is very effective for moderate blockages.

DPF forced regeneration: Forced regeneration is a means of forcing a vehicle to carry out a regen procedure on command. Sometimes, the criteria for the vehicle to do a regen itself is unmet (lots of short journeys when the engine doesn’t get up to operating temperature), and the filter never gets the opportunity to purge itself. This method is not without risk as the temperatures created can be very harmful. It’s vital therefore to only ever allow trained technicians like TayTec Tuning to carry out the work. We have seen numerous cases of melted internal components and irrecoverable damage caused by incorrect use of forced or static regeneration.

In-tank additives: While we fully endorse and supply quality DPF additives, it is very important that the correct selection is made. As a preventative measure, a DPF regen cleaner can encourage good regeneration, however, again due to the high temperatures which can be generated, these types of additives if used with a blocked DPF can cause significant damage.

There are several examples of fires resulting from a combination of the incorrect additives being used and a forced regeneration being carried out on a blocked DPF – Please, speak to us for advice.

DPF replacement: We wish to avoid a failed DPF at all costs, as their replacement is expensive. With ongoing maintenance and a more in-depth service from us if ever required, you can rest assured your DPF will last as long as the vehicle it is fitted to.

How can TayTec Tuning help?

We use the latest generation diagnostic equipment supporting all makes so we can resolve the issue by either diagnosing the root cause of the blocked DPF and carrying out safe cleaning and regeneration or where a nuisance ECU fault code is present, we can delete them.

AdBlue Solution | Dundee | TayTec Tuning

TayTec Tuning is your one-stop solution for all your AdBlue needs in Dundee. Our experienced technicians are dedicated to providing the highest quality AdBlue services to help you prevent and resolve any AdBlue issues to keep your diesel vehicle running smoothly.

AdBlue Solution

What is AdBlue?

AdBlue is a colourless, odourless, and non-toxic liquid solution that modern diesel engines use to minimize their emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx). These emissions are known to adversely affect human health and the environment. The solution comprises 32.5% high-purity urea and 67.5% deionised water. It is injected into the exhaust system to convert NOx into harmless nitrogen gas and water vapour.

In the third of our series on everything emission control…….we look closer at what an AdBlue system is, it’s possible issues and a solution we can offer here at TayTec Tuning.

Why AdBlue Solution

Several years ago, diesel vehicle manufacturers began installing AdBlue systems to lower NOx (Nitrogen Oxide) emissions. In broad terms, the system comprises a small tank containing AdBlue fluid injected into the exhaust in a process known as Selective Catalytic Reduction or SCR. The by-products are harmlessly ejected through the normal exhaust system.

How does AdBlue work?

AdBlue utilises Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR), a process in which the solution is injected into the exhaust system, reacting with nitrogen oxides (NOx) to transform them into harmless nitrogen gas and water vapour. This process occurs in a catalytic converter containing a special catalyst that facilitates the reaction.

adblue

Side Effects and Issues with AdBlue System

Another good step towards lowering emissions? Well, yes, in principal, however there are of course side effects of this.

The fluid requires topping up as with an empty tank, many vehicles will not start – have you ever seen the dreaded no engine start warning?

As with any ancillary automotive system, the SCR system requires maintenance and is prone to issues……imagine a fault which caused the no start situation above.

Repairs to the system are notoriously expensive, a pump replacement alone can run up to £1000.

On the commercial vehicle side, the situation is exacerbated due to much larger tanks and the significant loss of earnings from a stranded vehicle due to an AdBlue fault.

How do I maintain my AdBlue plastic tank?

AdBlue plastic tanks require minimum maintenance. However, it is crucial to look after them well and prevent contamination. The tanks must be periodically inspected for symptoms of harm or any leaks, and any maintenance needs to be made immediately to avoid AdBlue contamination.

Can AdBlue plastic tanks be used in exposed situations?

AdBlue tanks are appropriate for outdoor use but must be outside of direct daylight hours and intense weather conditions. Additionally, they need to be clear of anything that can cause excess wear or deterioration.

What is the lifespan of an AdBlue tank?

AdBlue plastic tanks are durable and might last for decades; however, their lifespan relies on factors including locations and what they are exposed to. Proper preservation and inspection can lengthen their lifespan.

How can TayTec Tuning help?

Solutions for AdBlue Systems

We use the latest generation diagnostic equipment supporting all makes so we can identify the issue, or where a nuisance ECU fault code is present, we can delete them. Where permitted* we can remove the SCR electronically from the ECU so that it is no longer in use, there is no more filling up, and there is no additional risk of faults and expensive repairs.

TayTec Tuning offer the very best in remapping and tuning available for VAG group cars.

You may have bought an Audi A3 and wish you had gone for an S3 or you may own a VW Golf R and just want something more, we have you covered and can tailor a package to suit your individual needs.

VAG group cars have for years been an entusiasts dream for tuning due to the availability of performance parts and tuning software, and none more so than the MQB platform cars such as the Audi S3 and VW Golf GTI.

What is the MQB platform from VAG?

The range introduced in 2012, is known as the MQB platform or Modularer Querbaukasten, which translates to “Modular Transversal Toolkit”.

It consists of a transversely mounted engine coupled to either front or four wheel drive and includes vehicles from VW, Audi, Skoda and Cupra.

car

Both petrol and diesel engines were made available, all of which can be tuned by TayTec Tuning for the following benefits:

  • More BHP

  • Increased Torque

  • Safer Overtaking

  • Improved MPG

  • Lower Emissions

We are an approved Viezu Performance Tuning dealer and offer their remapping software which has been developed over many years of dyno and emissions testing on their 3000bhp dyno. We truly believe in this software and work exclusively with their file writers to achieve what we believe is the best ECU tuning software on the market.

Our technicians use specialist tuning tools from Alientech and Magic Motorsport and have the ability to tune vehicles via the OBD port, or with an ECU removed, on the bench.

What is the process for ECU Remapping in Perth?

At TayTec we always follow the same process

It’s good to talk and the first stage at TayTec Tuning is a detailed conversation with every customer and as we use only custom software (no generic off the shelf maps here!) we can tailor the tune to individual requirements. In some cases, outright power is the goal, in others we can focus on fuel economy or a custom blend of both.

Once the objective is understood, we then continue to establish the vehicles history. We rarely see a vehicle which is unfit to be tuned as the vast majority of our customers are discerning owners who appreciate their cars and have looked after them accordingly.

Any underlying faults will be discussed and confirmed with a full complimentary diagnostic check using latest generation diagnostic equipment. Sometimes this can reveal a previously unknown issue, unrelated to carrying out the tuning, but we are happy to supply a full diagnostic report so the customer can arrange to have any remedial work carried out.

From this point on, our technicians will take a read of the software currently installed in the vehicles ECU, and it this file which is sent to our master file writers at Viezu. This is where the magic happens and recalibrations are made to such things as fuel and boost pressure or ignition timing and advance. This is truly a custom process and we can take advantage of any modifications already in place, like performance exhausts or air filters.

Within an hour (usually around 20 minutes) this file is returned to us live and we proceed to overwrite the stock file with the modified file.

We always carry out a post-tune diagnostic scan, once more, just to confirm no other fault codes are present and then the vehicle is handed back to the customer.

You know your vehicle and how it drives so we always encourage the customer to carry out an unaccompanied test drive so they can appreciate the difference for themselves. This really is the best part of the job and we frequently see customers struggling to hide a smile which tells us all we need to know!

Contact us today to discuss your requirements and let us give you that brand new car feeling all over again with an ECU Remap for your Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda, Seat or Cupra.

Where should I go for Audi and VW Tuning and ECU Remapping in Fife| TayTec Tuning

We have another post regarding the tunability of the VAG Group MQB range of cars here but what are the benefits of a Tuning & ECU Remapping package from TayTec Tuning?

  • Increased Power

  • More Torque

  • Safer Overtaking

  • Better MPG

  • More pulling power

The MQB range of vehicles from Audi, VW, Skoda, Seat and Cupra have the 2.0 TFSI variant of the EA888 model which in standard form develops 240 to 310 BHP from its inline 4 cylinder turbocharged petrol engine.

In general, the engine and its ancillaries (turbocharger, fuel pump, injectors etc) are common to all models in the range and only the software contained in the cars ECU dictates the power output. Some models are therefore said to be a de-tuned version of their more powerful counterparts so they have much to offer in terms of tuning potential.

Viezu Performance Tuning | Approved Dealer | TayTec Tuning

As a Viezu Performance Tuning approved dealer, at TayTec Tuning we have put together a custom package for these cars and through significant testing, we are delighted to offer this package and call it Stage 1+.

What is the TayTec Tuning Stage 1+ Package

We build around Stage 1 ECU tuning software from Viezu Performance Tuning by adding the following performance tuning parts:

           · Performance panel air filter or induction kit

          · Modified air intake duct

          · Uprated silicone turbo intake hose

         · Uprated turbo inlet/elbow

We use upgrade parts from a selection of manufacturers such as Pipercross, Ramair, Racingline, Airtec and Turbo Technics so we can offer a number of options for various budgets, contact us to discuss the possibilities.

What is the TayTec Tuning difference?

Like many cars the OEM air intake system is not only a narrow diameter but is uneven and restrictive. You can see the difference between the OEM plastic intake and the CNC machined billet aluminium version we use:

kk

The advantages of this intake upgrade are:

  • Eliminates the highly restrictive plastic inlet

  • Replaced by high grade smooth bore silcone hose (choice of colours)

  • Increases airflow

  • Improves efficiency and performance

  • Enchanced looks for any engine bay

Our stage 1 remap is proven to produce around 365 BHP and 480 Nm* and you can reasonably expect at least another 8-10 BHP on top of these figures with the addition of the tuning mods we install as part of the package. Not only that, but you will instantly feel the benefit of a free flowing engine with faster turbo spool up times and crisper throttle response.

We genuinely believe the TayTec Tuning Stage 1+ Package offers THE best bang-for-buck available and we can install not only the ECU remapping software but also all performance tuning parts as part of our mobile service so you don’t need to be without your car for any length of time.

This is a unique service and we can offer Tuning and ECU Remapping in Fife and beyond.

TCU Tuning for DSG Gearbox

The perfect way to enjoy the benefits of our Stage 1+ Package for DSG equipped cars is to incorporate a gearbox TCU (Transmission Control Unit) remap.

Many parameters are adjusted to maximise the gear shift points and align the gearbox to operate seamlessly with the new engine ECU software.

This is a step either not offered or overlooked but the difference is instantly noticeable and we recommend it for all DSG and DCT gearboxes when an ECU remap is carried out.

We offer special discounts when the TCU remap is carried out at the same time as other tuning so get in touch to discuss a package tailored to your car.

Of course we don’t just offer tuning and remap packages for VAG group cars – whether you drive a BMW, a Ford or something much more unique – speak to us today to discuss a custom package for you and your car

Who to trust with DSG and TCU Tuning and Remapping in Dundee, TayTec Tuning

What is a DSG Gearbox and why should I remap it?

Standing for Direct Shift Gearbox, and known by lots of manufacturer’s names such as S-Tronic, PowerShift or SpeedShift the DSG is an electronically controlled dual-clutch automatic transmission. It can be pictured as two independent gearboxes each with their own wet clutch contained within the same housing. The advantages to a DSG over a traditional automatic transmission are:

  • Fast and smooth gear changes

  • Optimised ratio for the driving conditions

  • Increased fuel economy

  • Reduced clutch wear compared to manual transmissions

How does a DSG Gearbox work?

The gear ratios are arranged on an outer and inner shaft (odd gears and reverse on the outer shaft, even gears on the inner) each with their own clutch. As the next gear is already pre-selected, the change from one gear to the next (from an odd gear to an even or vice versa) is achieved simply by controlling which clutch engages. This dramatically reduces change times to a matter of hundredths of a second.

How does a DSG Gearbox work.

How is a DSG gearbox controlled?

In the same way an engine requires an ECU, the Transmission requires a TCU or Transmission Control System.

The TCU needs to take inputs from many sensors on the car to decide which gear to select under which conditions and it works in cooperation with the ECU to ensure the best gear is in use for a given driving condition. In the same way as an ECU, the TCU is equally as responsive to tuning and this is where TayTec Tuning can help.

There is no question that a proper ECU remap carried out by a professional tuner such as TayTec Tuning offers the single biggest increase in performance, but when a DSG gearbox is present, there will come a point that the TCU will not allow the ECU its full potential and as a result will limit torque.

When an ECU remap is completed, we always recommend a TCU remap is also installed to ensure the TCU is recalibrated to work alongside the new ECU parameters and allow more torque to be transferred from engine and transmission resulting in more power and torque being available throughout the rev range.

We also have the ability to add custom features during the modification to improve the driving experience.

Working with industry leading recalibration software experts Viezu Performance Tuning we can provide the following improvements to your DSG TCU.

  • Increased torque limits to match remapped ECU

  • Increased max RPM and shift points

  • Faster gear shift times of up to 50%!

  • Increased clutch clamp force to reduce slip and wear

  • Optimised gearshift points in different driving modes. For example we can tailor at what RPM the change takes place in different modes (Normal, Race/Dynamic)

  • Customised launch control RPM

We offer custom tuning packages and discounts are available for combined ECU and TCU tuning. Contact us to discuss your individual requirements for DSG and TCU Tuning and Remapping in Dundee and we’d be happy to talk you through the advantages on your car.

Where can I get Bench ECU Remapping in Dundee

In the world of ECU Tuning and Remapping there are several ways to install performance tuning software onto a cars ECU. The industry has moved on from chip tuning and generally now fuel maps and calibrations are held within the memory of the ECU.

How we access them defines the type of tuning – be it OBD or Bench Mode (sometimes called Service Mode).

OBDII diagnostic ports have been commonplace since the early 2000s and their introduction brought many benefits:

  • Common connection type for all manufacturers and workshops

  • Real time analysis of CAN data

  • Ability to flash software updates quickly and easily

  • Fault code reading and clearing

OBD tuning on the face of it seems like the obvious choice so why would we not opt to use it?

Tuning tool manufacturers must release the capability to tune every make and model of ECU they wish to support. Note here we say ECU as opposed to vehicle. The connection to the individual ECU is the important consideration, the vehicle it is fitted to is at this stage, irrelevant if we cannot access it. The connection type is known as a protocol and that protocol will be different from model to model and between OBD and Bench modes.

Some ECUs are supplied by vehicle manufacturers with anti-tune software. The Continental SID 212 is an example and you can read more about that here and also a solution offered by TayTec Tuning. Some ECUs are encrypted to prevent external interface via the OBD port so the tuning market needed another way to make the connection.

This is where Boot or Service Mode tuning comes in. This is the term used when the connections between ECU and tuning tool are made directly onto the multi way connectors on the ECU case by removing the need to do so through the OBD port and the various CAN BUS networks onboard the vehicle.

OBDII

This means access is required to the ECU connectors, which in some modern vehicles is simple due to the ECU being located in a very accessible spot

Failing that, our technicians simply remove the ECU (following all manufacturer safety precautions) where it is transferred to the workshop bench for tuning….hence the term.

workshop bench for tuning

There are several advantages to tuning on the bench as opposed to OBD and while any tuning should only ever be carried out by well trained and accredited technicians, you can trust TayTec Tuning to carry out the process safely and professionally from start to finish.

Advantages of Bench over OBD Tuning include:

  • Wider range of supported ECU and vehicles vs OBD

  • Enables tuning of many manufacturer locked ECUs

  • Suitable when wiring faults or OBD plug damage is present

  • Faster file read and write times

  • No requirement to stabilise power to the whole vehicle during tuning – voltage is maintained on the bench with far less current draw

From the point at which the software is read, the process is the same although as mentioned, sometimes much quicker than via OBD.

You may have spoken to another tuner and been told

“Sorry your car is not supported” – This is something we hear a lot!

Not all tuning companies and the tools they use are the same

Not all ECUs are supported by all tools. Furthermore, not all tuners have access to all tools. At TayTec we use latest generation Alientech and Magic Motorsport tuning tools so we cover a far greater variety of ECUs and vehicles.

Get in touch today with your vehicle details and tuning requirements and we’ll be delighted to discuss the options with you for Bench ECU Remapping in Dundee

DPF Cleaning | Dundee | TayTec Tuning

It’s an unfortunate fact that DPF systems are prone to issues, and while some manufacturers are more prone than others, it doesn’t take much for a small issue to become very expensive £££….very quickly. So for all DPF Cleaning in Dundee, contact TayTec Tuning.

DPF Deletion is Illegal!

DPF Deletion is Illegal!

Firstly, we must point out the physical removal of a DPF from a UK road vehicle is illegal and will fail an MOT test. There are of course other situations where DPF Solutions are required, such as Motorsport or specialist projects and TayTec Tuning can assist. In the meantime, for an overview of how a DPF works and interacts with your vehicle, please see here

DPF Cleaning

In the main there are two methods of cleaning a DPF filter, either on the vehicle or by removing it first.
There are merits to both ways but at TayTec Tuning, we focus on in-situ cleaning, as we believe this offers not only the best value for money but the most thorough option.

Let’s explain more....

We know that the purpose of the DPF is to trap harmful soot particles and through various means, convert them to harmless ash. There is very little to go wrong within the DPF itself, so aside from a cracked or physically damaged filter unit, every blocked DPF we see is related to something somewhere else on the vehicle, external to the DPF itself.

As we’ve said, the way in which the DPF carries out the conversion from soot to ash depends on the manufacturer, but normally involves generating temperatures high enough to burn soot, leaving harmless ash as the by-product. These temperatures can be around 700° C and can include the following methods:

  • DPF Regeneration – Excess heat is generated by deliberately using a rich fuel mixture. This can either be supplied by a fuel injector or vapouriser directly into the DPF, or by overfueling at the fuel injectors and activating the glow plugs to create the secondary combustion required to raise exhaust gas temperature sufficiently.

  • EOLYS or PAT Fluid – This is an additive contained in a separate tank on the vehicle (not to be confused with AdBlue systems). It is an iron-based liquid which when injected into the DPF reduces the combustion temperature of the soot, allowing it to be burned at a lower temperature.

Basically, we need to:
Increase exhaust temperatures to burn off the soot or
Reduce the temperature at which the soot combusts.

Forced DPF Regen - CAUTION!

Artificially raising exhaust temperatures on a blocked DPF can result in severe damage or fire. A Forced or Static Regeneration is not a DIY procedure and if carried out incorrectly can be incredibly dangerous.

Treat the Cause not the Symptom

We can see the DPFs reliance on many external components, so should a malfunction occur, in a seemingly unrelated system, the result is a DPF which cannot self-regulate and a blockage soon follows.

This demonstrates that its absolutely vital to use a DPF Cleaning specialist such as TayTec Tuning. We carry out a full diagnostic check prior to carrying out any work and by engaging with the customer early, we can avoid the cost of unnecessary repairs.
We have seen thousands of ££££ worth of more than likely perfectly good components replaced due to misdiagnosis. Turbochargers, manifolds, additive tanks, EGRs, coolers and DPFs themselves – all replaced only for the DPF to block a matter of miles later!

As part of the diagnostic scan we complete a thorough assessment of every possibly related component to get to the root cause of the issue. We rectify that problem first then follow up with a thorough on-vehicle clean of the DPF with our specialist cleaning system.

On Vehicle DPF Cleaning | Dundee | TayTec Tuning

On Vehicle DPF Cleaning | Dundee | TayTec Tuning

At TayTec we believe (and our customers agree) that on vehicle DPF cleaning has several advantages over removal for cleaning.

As discussed above, the interaction between the DPF and the many other systems on the vehicle needs to be fully assessed prior to the correct diagnosis being reached.

Without the DPF in place and a full diagnostic assessment being made, it is highly likely the root cause could be overlooked. There are several other advantages to our specialist DPF Cleaning System:

  • Full vehicle diagnostic assessment can be carried out – Free PDF report provided

  • Root cause can be identified

  • Real time data monitoring before, during and after

  • Avoids risk of physical damage to the expensive DPF

  • Can be carried out by our mobile service in 20-30 minutes

  • Vehicle can remain in use, not off the road – no inconvenience or loss of earnings for commercial vehicles

  • Removes risk of false diagnosis and fault coming straight back
